Lightweight protective fabrics have been tested by EN ISO 11612, EN ISO 11611 protective clothing, and NFPA 70E with HRC 2. It includes inherent heat and flame resistant properties to avoid arc flash blasts that can cause a worker’s clothing to ignite, instantly melt, or break open, causing severe skin burns.

Sunny FR fabrics have excellent arc flash protection, with their arc thermal performance value reaching at least 8 cal/cm2 with a category 2 PPE rating. Thanks to our advanced fiber blending, FR properties are built into the fabric and will not be washed out.
They also have excellent NFPA 70E HRC 2 and NFPA 2112 test value, and the fabrics are soft and breathable, with excellent moisture management due to special cellulosic fiber content.

Why is the Arc Rating important for arc flash PPE?

FR workwear is made of FR fabric, and the main purpose is flame resistance. However, in the case of such disasters as arc flash, the impact is far greater than general fire damage. All AR garments are flame retardant (FR), but not all FR-rated garments are arc-rated. People cannot get proper workwear when the arc rating is not marked. Therefore, flame-resistant fabric needs the arc rating.

In 2018, the NFPA committee revised the standard and name of HRC (Hazard Risk Category) and designed PPE 1~4 according to the degree of risk exposure. Arc-flash explosions due to electrical equipment failure depend on the electrical equipment's energy delivery capability, measured in calories per square centimeter. The ARC rating determines the protective properties of the fabric. The higher the ARC rating, the greater the protection.

What is arc flash?

Arc Flash is an electrical failure when coming into contact with air that causes it to explode. It can produce light and heat with temperatures as high as 2,800 to 19,000 °C, about 4 times the surface temperature of the sun. The high temperature of the instant explosion can melt even metal, not to mention human skin, and cause lung and vision damage.
